Philip Huckin
Philip Huckin is a contemporary artist based in Wales and is known for his evocative landscape paintings and drawings, particularly of Ceredigion.
About his Art: Subject Matter
The central theme of Huckin's work is the Ceredigion landscape in Mid Wales, and encompasses its mountains, hills, and coastline. He explores the natural and man-made boundaries that define the area, such as field lines, hedgerows, river valleys, and historical structures like farmsteads and ruins.
Style and Medium
His work includes paintings in acrylic and watercolour and drawings in watercolour, pen and pastel. His style captures the light and atmosphere of the Welsh landscape.
Inspiration
He finds inspiration in the Ceredigion landscape with its deep cultural history, and has learnt Welsh to better understand the place names and cultural significance of the area he depicts. He has a strong connection to the concept of "Hiraeth," a Welsh word describing a longing for a place.
Education
He studied Art and History at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, in the 1970s and later returned to his old university to receive a scholarship and an MA in Fine Art in 2012.
Collections
His work is held in public and private collections, including The National Library of Wales, The Tannery collection MOMA Machynlleth and Aberystwyth University.
Books
He has collaborated with the Welsh poet and winner of the National Eisteddfod Crown Cyril Jones, and the archeologist Professor David Austin on two bilingual books that combine his artwork with poetry and essays exploring the history and culture of Ceredigion.
The River Arth's Magic (Hud Afon Arth) Gwasg Gwynfil 2015
The Spirit of Strata Florida (Ysbryd Ystrad Fflur) Gwasg Gwynfil 2017
He has also illustrated a Welsh language novel for young people written by Meilyr Sion.
